春小麦是我县最主要的粮食作物,播种面积由1960年的345,458亩,扩大到1980年的427,051亩,占夏粮面积的90.7％。由于小麦面积大,连作时间长,除导致病虫滋生蔓延外,田间杂草丛生,特别是燕麦草泛滥成灾,对小麦生产威胁很大。据1979年粗略统计,全县每年受燕麦草危害严重的小麦面积达十万亩左右,损失粮食约一千万斤以上。据调查,一般每亩有燕麦草10—50万株,严重影响小麦的生长发育。给农业生产造成很大危害。
