Rain (RAIN), also known as Miss Thompson, is one of Maugham’s famous short stories that has been on the screen and on the stage many times since it was released in 1921. The novel describes a fanatical missionary who at first attempted to use a religious force to turn a prostitute back into shame, but later he was conquered by the evil in his heart. On the surface, he was ostensibly and pugnaciously carrying out a scandalous scandal that finally fell apart. Using delicate brushwork and scene-setting techniques, the author reveals the hypocrisy and despicable realities of the missionaries, while also ridiculing the hypocrisy and fraudulence of bourgeois morality. Although the novel places some kind of sympathy with Dr Macferh on the sufferings of prostitute Thompson, there appears to be a lack of a more profound analysis of the social causes of prostitution.
