Reflective seismology is by far the most effective geophysical technique. Structures inside the crust can reflect pressure waves from surface sources, such as pressure waves generated by ground-borne or controlled explosions in trucks in a 200-tonne truck. Geophysicists can detect these reflected waves with sensitive microphones and record them on magnetic tape. If you systematically move the source and the receiver (towing the instrument behind the boat at sea is a simple solution), geophysicists can capture detailed data on these reflected waves. Then, after computer processing and plotting, they can plot the distance from the surface to the return time and get partial images of the upper crust (typically at least 5 km and sometimes deeper).
