摘要： 在英语学习中，人们经常会遇到表达否定意义的“不”字。学会使用适当的词汇表达这一含义，领会并掌握语言表达的灵活性，有助于了解英语语言的多样性，并提高我们自如运用英语语言的能力。

我们经常会在英语学习过程中遇到表达否定意义的“不”字，一般要表达这类意义时，人们往往会想到否定词no，not等，但表达否定含义不只限于这两个词汇，了解和掌握其它表达否定意义“不”字的词汇，在英语交际中运用适当的词语不仅能达到准确、顺畅地传递信息、交流思想的目的，还会使语言更加生动、灵活。以下是笔者在英语学习过程中对否定意义“不”字英译的一些归纳小结。
要表达“不”这一否定意义，no和not是人们最常使用的词。如：
Learning lists of words，English on one side，Chinese the other，is no way to acquire a useful vocabulary.
学习英语词汇，一边是英语，另一边是对应的汉语，是绝不会学到有用的词语的。
It’s no good knowing all about a language，if you can’t use it.
了解一种语言而不去使用它，是毫无用处的。
But it doesn’t work that way in learning — just as it doesn’t in the Olympic games.
但是在学习上那样是行不通的，就像在奥林区克运动会上也行不通一样。
其实，英语中表达“不”这一否定含义的词并不只限于no， not，我们还可以使用英语词汇的词根加前缀（in-，im-，dis-，un-）或词根加后缀（-less）构成的合成词。如：
He felt inadequate when faced by a difficult problem.
他面对难题觉得力不从心。
It’s impossible for me to be there before 8∶00p.m.
要我晚上8点之前赶到那儿是根本办不到的。
I feel sick：that fish disagreed with me .
我感觉到恶心，那条鱼吃得我不舒服。
He was unaware of my presence.
他不知道我在场。
Thanks to your tireless efforts on our behalf .
多亏你为我们能做的不懈努力。
I’ve told him countless times .
我告诉他无数次了（不计其数）。
有时，我们也会习惯地用lack或fail表达这类意思。
What he lacks in experience he makes up for in enthusiasm.
他热心工作以弥补其经验的不足。
Our water supply has failed（us）.
我们的水供应不足。
此外，beyond，without，out及out of等也可表示“不、无、没”等否定含义。
The town had changed beyond recognition.
这个小镇变得让人认不出来了。
The bicycle is beyond repair.
这自行车没法修了。
It is quite beyond me.这我不太懂。
She is living beyond her means.她入不敷出。
It’s beyond my imagination.我真想象不出。
He walked past me without speaking.
他从我身旁走过，一句话也没说。
She spoke without enthusiasm.她讲话时无精打采。
I phoned Sally but she was out.我给萨莉打电话，可是她不在。
Flared trousers are out this year.今年喇叭裤不时兴了。
Swimming in the sea is out until the weather gets warmer.在海里游泳还不是时候，等天暖些再游。
I’m beginning to feel out of patience.我觉得有些不耐烦了。
而“be out of”意为“have no”、“not concerned with（sth）”或“not involved in”，如下例：
He’s been out of work for six months.他已失业六个月了。
It’s a dishonest scheme and I’m glad to be out of it.那是个骗局，我幸而置身事外（与其无关/没牵连在内）。
有时，我们也可以使用一些形容词或实意动词来表达否定含义。
He has a poor memory.他的记忆力差（记性不好）。
I’m afraid the fact slipped my memory. 很抱歉，此事我记不得了。
除上述词语外，英语中表达否定意义和词汇还有许多，在此不一一列举。在日常英语学习过程中，注意不同否定意义词汇的表达特点，掌握其在不同语言环境中的使用方法，不断在实践中积累，就会对英语语言的灵活性、多样化了解得更深刻，从而也会促进和提高我们自如运用英语语言的能力。
