一切伟大的艺术家都在创造一个宇宙。然而,他们中间很少有人能够令他们的同时代人或后代相信:艺术家的想象就是一种“真实”,他们想描绘的事件都是有意义的,是与实情相吻合的。法国大革命时期最为煊赫的政治画家雅克一路易·大卫(1748—1825)便是这寥若晨星者之一。无论法国人还是外国人,他们都把大卫对他那个时代的生动描绘视为是他对历史事件的忠实记录。请看画面:大革命的先驱者发出不自由毋宁死的誓言;雅各宾派的辩论家马拉倒在血泊的浴盆里;消磨光阴的雷卡米埃夫人坐在罗马式的靠榻上;不可一世的拿破仑给约瑟芬戴上法国皇后的桂冠,等等。
All great artists are creating a universe. However, few of them are able to convince their contemporaries or future generations that the artist’s imagination is “real” and that the things they want to portray are all meaningful and relevant to reality. Jacques-Louis-David (1748-1825), one of the most prominent political painters of the French Revolution, was one of those rare morning stars. Both French and foreigners view David’s vivid portrayal of his time as his faithful record of historical events. Look at the picture: The Pioneers of the Revolution gave the vows of not being free or not; the Jacobin-dispatched aristocrat Mara fell in a pool of blood; and Mrs. Lecamee, who spent time sitting on a Roman couch, Napoleon to Josephine to wear the crown of the French Empire, and so on.
