书法艺术自乾隆以降,对书家的文字学修养要求日高,这种取向,若追溯其来由,起码可以上溯到唐代的开元时期,那时李阳冰校刊的许慎《说文解字》开始流行,而李氏本人正是一位书法家,他得笔于李斯《峄山碑》并自成一格,获得了“笔虎”的美誉,后世从学者甚多。徐铉说:“李阳冰篆迹殊绝,独冠古今,自云‘斯翁之后直至小生’,此言为不妄矣。”多年前,我们曾撰文讨论过伊墨卿秉绶先生的金石学修养,但对于他的文字学工夫则未暇涉及,只提到他在嘉庆元年(1796)为文字学大师桂馥的《缪篆分韵》手书一卷付梓之事。现
