The contents of tungsten and molybdenum in soils and sedimentary rocks are relatively low. The background value of tungsten in soils and rocks is about 1 ppm (1). The average abundance of tungsten in granites is 1.4 ppm (2). A common method for the determination of trace amounts of tungsten and molybdenum is to use a dithiol or thiocyanate colorimetric assay after concentration and separation (3.4). B. F.
