Recently, both Japan and South Korea started a fierce confrontation over the issue of sovereignty over Dokdo (Japan's “Takeshima”). Just over a month ago, on March 7, William Falun, commander of the U.S. Pacific headquarters, had proposed that the United States should break through the existing bilateral alliance established with Japan and South Korea and promote “three-sided military cooperation with South Korea, Japan and the United States.” Burwell Bale, commander of the U.S. military in South Korea, also revealed that the “triangular” military cooperation among the United States, Japan and South Korea should be the general direction of future development. These views have basically won the approval of top military and government officials in the United States. Therefore, building the “iron triangle” of the East Asian military will become an important part of the strategic deployment of the future East Asia.
