Eddy current detectors can inspect cracks inside small-diameter metal pipes. Originally, the probe was designed to inspect the coolant pipes of the shuttle’s main engine nozzle. The metal tube is bent sharply before mounting on the aircraft engine. Previously, the tube after the bend to take a number of samples to do metallographic examination to see if there is a crack. If a small percentage of samples are defective, the entire batch has to be scratched. This manufacturing phase is of great importance to the quality of the pipe - for each over $ 250, a large investment is lost when the pipe is scrapped, and if half of the pipe is good, it can be used without waste, The engine can save 125,000 dollars. The new detector distinguishes cracked and crack-free tubes from being bent.
