Among immunosuppressants, there are increasing reports of leishmaniasis as an opportunistic infection and the reactivation of leishmania persisting in the patient’s body may be responsible for the pathogenesis of these patients. This review summarizes the significance of the sustained infection of Leishmania in human and murine models for the relapse of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Data suggest that persistent infection with Leishmania is a common phenomenon, the in-depth study of this phenomenon will detect the possibility of recurrence of the disease, the evaluation of new therapies in patients with recurrent and anti-Leishmania vaccine design and development May have important implications.
