Objective To establish a classification framework and coding system for public health datasets to achieve a unified description, identification, query, and management of public health dataset information. Methods The basic data sets that can be processed by the information system in the business, scientific research, and management activities in the public health field are used as the object of classification. The method of combining line classification and surface classification methods is used to classify the data by subcategories, subcategories, and main classes. The subject domain consists of four levels and builds a classification framework, and successively abstracts and merges public health datasets with common subject features, generates hierarchical categories, and then applies a matching technology to systematically encode the datasets. Results (1) Established four public health information classification frameworks including disease prevention and control, public health services, public health management and health supervision, 18 main categories, 49 subcategories and 205 subcategories; (2) Design The coding system consists of 7 main classification codes and 30 code classifications including 4 regions, including area code, organization code, disease classification code, and discipline classification code. The 50 basic data sets provided by the nine fields of public health were used to classify the classification into performance tests and code retrieval tests, and both reached the expected goals. The conclusion is that this classification and coding method is suitable for the classification and coding practice of information exchange in the public health field.
