稀土金属钐是当代最重要的永磁材料。金属镧常用作冶金还原剂,它又是耐热合金和贮氢、贮能合金的重要组元。钐和镧在国民经济和国防建设中有着重要的用途。随着电子工业的加速发展和新式无污染氢能源以及其它新材料的相继出现,世界单一稀土金属钐和镧的需求量正在跃然上升,其产量和价格也在不断增长。据国外资料报导,单一稀土金属和化合物产品在国外稀土生产中,仅有约3%的比率,但其产值却占稀土总产品的40%。由此可见,稀土金属的分离和深度加工有着重大的技术经济意义。
