Objective To understand the case fatality rate and cause of death of HIV / AIDS patients in Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province from 2011 to 2012. Methods The historical records of HIV / AIDS cases in Dehong prefecture of Yunnan province were downloaded from the National Integrated HIV / AIDS Prevention and Control Information System. The current addresses and household registration places for 2011-2012 are investigated and verified. Results A total of 7 178 HIV / AIDS survivors were reported in early 2011, of which 330 (4.6%) died in 2011; 773 newly reported HIV-infected persons were reported in 2011, of which 46 (6.0%) died in 2011. In 2012, 7575 cases of HIV / AIDS survived in early 2012, of which 326 (4.3%) died in 2012; 598 newly reported HIV-infected persons were reported in 2012, of which 33 (5.0%) died in 2012. Among the dead HIV / AIDS cases, 56.3% died of AIDS, 18.4% died of other diseases (mainly liver diseases and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases), 14.6% died of drug abuse, 7.2% died of injuries and 2.2% died of suicide . Conclusions The mortality rate of HIV / AIDS cases in Dehong from 2011 to 2012 continued to decline, but nearly half of the deaths were caused by diseases other than AIDS and accidental injuries. In order to reduce the case fatality rate of HIV / AIDS cases, we should step up prevention and control of liver diseases and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases while strengthening antiviral treatment and reduce death caused by overdose and accidental injury.
