A so-called “Randstad” study in the Netherlands in 1998 that studied the future of larger and more systematic use of underground space in the western part of the country intends to continue its research on the possible use of underground space for the entire Netherlands, namely “Strategic Research on the Utilization of Underground Space”. The study examines the wider use of underground space to improve the possibilities of the Randstad ideal model of future spatial development. The model is to participate in the Randstad research priorities in the provinces, improve the effectiveness of expanding space use and maintenance, or improve the quality of the regional space, investigate social, cost, groundwater and policy aspects, the study shows some notable achievements in Specific areas may receive up to 50% of available space. When operating and maintaining costs are taken into account, the underground construction of some facilities is no more expensive than on the ground, as opposed to the widely held view in the Netherlands.
