From time to time, the controversy over translation methods seems never to have been beyond the dichotomy and trichotomy. The close adherence to translation methods proposed by Newmark in the 1990s can well integrate the literal translation and free translation of the translation field. However, Newmark lost the powerful vitality of the theory because it did not relate the close-to-translation approach that guides the translation of microtexts to the text-type theory that guides macro-text translations. By organically linking Newmark’s two theories, this paper proposes a close-to-translation approach to text type association. At the same time, it explores how to use the theory to guide the translation of culturally loaded words in the Tang poetry, which proves that the theory has good operability and practicability.
