Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common cause of blindness in diabetics aged 30-64 and is currently the second leading cause of new blindness in the United States. The longer the duration of diabetes, the higher the incidence of retinopathy. DR has haemodynamic and structural abnormalities caused by damage to retinal blood vessels by a variety of unknown biochemical or endocrine mechanisms.
