阿拉山口——亚欧第二座大陆桥的开通,结束了乌鲁木齐局路网未稍的局情,使过去极不显眼的兰新铁路西段处于中外注目的地位。这座大陆桥贯通了东起我国连云港,西至荷兰鹿特丹,横跨欧亚两大洲,中途穿行近六个国家,它不仅对发展新疆和整个西北地区经济将发挥重要作用,而且对发展我国同苏联独联体、东欧、西欧乃至中东地区各国的经济贸易往来和科学文化交流都有重要意义。其特点是,吸引范围广、运程短,日本、朝鲜、港奥及东南亚各国的货物经此线运输,比经由西伯利亚铁路(第一座大陆桥)缩短约2000km;比取道苏伊士运河的海运节省20%的运费,运期还缩短一半。由此而见,阿拉山口是未来国际联运的“热桥”。
