Iris Murdoch(1919--1999),famous as an English Post-World War II fiction writers,is one of the most distinguished novelists in the world.She is an productive author of twenty-six novels,six philosophical works;a number of plays,interviews and articles.[1](P1) The Bell was Murdoch’s fourth novel and one of the most widely read one.From its appearance,criticism on this novel has been conducted from a variety of angles,some from the Feminist viewpoint;some from the parallels between this novel and “The Divine Comedy” of Dante;some from the writing techniques;some from its themes;but few from the postcolonial aspect.Post-colonialism is a continuation of decolonization carried on in the western academy.As a branch of humanities,it explores political,social and cultural effects of decolonization,and the anti-colonial challenge to Western dominance,and tries to change the way we think about the world after the colonial age.There are a few key post-colonial key concepts,such as other,identity,hybridity etc,in post-colonialism.[2](P24) The Bell obviously has these features.In the following part,we will only analyze “other” in this novel.
