This paper reports the identification of a DNA marker that is closely linked to rice scented genes. The marker was obtained by Southern blotting of 126 cloned rice genomic clones, cDNA clones and oat cDNA clones as hybridization probes with DNA containing a pair of near-isogenic lines with and without aroma genes Hybridization and identified. The chromosomal segments that have penetrated from the genome of the scent gene donor are identifiable between near-isogenic pairs. The linkage of clones with the aroma gene was confirmed by using a population of F3 generation separated by aroma. The consistent separation of the scent phenotype and the scent gene from the donor indicates that there is a linkage between the DNA marker and the gene. RFLP analysis showed that this gene was linked to RG28, a single copy DNA clone, on chromosome 8 with a map distance of 4.5 cM. In rice breeding, the identification of DNA markers linked to scent genes may contribute to the early selection of scent.
