It is said that the Tonle Sap is rapidly being filled with sediment as sediment production in the catchment area increases. Filling of lakes and basins will have a serious impact on the scale of flooding in central Cambodia and the Mekong Delta, threatening the unique ecosystem of lakes. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the results of radioactive carbon dating and hydraulic modeling of silt cores, based on an empirical assessment of this issue. We found that the current sedimentation rate in the lake basin itself is very low and has lasted for thousands of years. However, the relatively high sedimentation in the periphery of the lake and in the flood plains triggered a series of problems in riverbank communities.
