Numerous data suggest that hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, locus coeruleus and dorsal raphe nucleus play an important role in the modulation of pain and there is a functional and structural relationship between the three nuclei. Our previous work has observed that peripheral noxious stimuli cause a heterogeneous evoked potential in the arcuate nucleus.
