《尚书·大禹谟》“人心惟危,道心惟微。惟精惟一,允执厥中”为宋明理学的重要论题,自朱熹以之作为道统论的依据,并提出了完整的理论解释后,此“十六字心传”便为理学家们所广泛讨论。明末的刘蕺山对十六字诀有着极大的兴趣,终其一生都探讨不断,尤其是晚年蕺山结合诚意慎独之说,对十六字诀的诠释紧扣慎独宗旨,并以之贯通《大学》、《中庸》,讲出了一套极为精微复杂的理论。人心道心之说在蕺山的哲学体系中地位十分特殊,虽然只有十六字,但却几乎涉及到了蕺山哲学的所有面向,其所阐发的义理深度,在整个宋明理学中实不多见。
