Objective To investigate the awareness of STD / AIDS related knowledge of female sex workers in receiving education in Shanghai Public Security Bureau, and to make a preliminary assessment of the effect of education and intervention in receiving schools through the comparison of awareness rate of admission and departure. Methods According to the questionnaire of national sex workers comprehensively formulated by the state, the survey was carried out based on the relevant articles of STD related to health education in Baoshan District, Shanghai. The demographic data and STD / AIDS related knowledge items were collected. In 2008 and 2009, a total of 196 new arrivals were randomly selected to conduct self-control surveys. Results Among 196 female sex workers surveyed and interviewed, 85 were married, accounting for 43.4%; 78 were unmarried, accounting for 39.8%; 1 were cohabitants, accounting for 0.5%; 32 were divorced and widowed, accounting for 16.3%. 18 under the age of 20, accounting for 9.2%; 20 to 29 years old 89, accounting for 45.4%; 30 to 39 years old 70, accounting for 35.7%; 40 years old and 19, accounting for 9.7%. At the time of entry, the awareness rate of HIV / AIDS among female sex workers was 76.2%, and the awareness rate at the time of exit was 98.2%. The difference was statistically significant (P <0.01) by chi-square test. Conclusion The awareness rate of HIV / AIDS among FSWs was low at the time of entry. However, the awareness of HIV / AIDS prevention and control in this population increased significantly through repeated interventions in the receiving school, suggesting the importance of health education in AIDS STD prevention and control.
