Lasers are promising as heat treatment tools that increase the wear and corrosion resistance of steel plating. This technique has been demonstrated in a study for the US Army Land Equipment Research and Development Command. In this research project, CO2 laser irradiation was used to improve the interfacial properties of Cr or Cr / Co coatings on steel substrates. These coatings were prepared by controlled diffusion and fusion. Low-shrinkage (LC) chromium and high-shrinkage (HC) chromium were studied. HC Chromium is the harder of the two, but cracks and flakes are easily generated under stress; LC chrome is softer, easier to spread, less peel and oxidize. In some experiments, the addition of a cobalt layer between steel and chromium increased corrosion resistance by eliminating the formation of a brittle Cr / Fe carbide phase at the interface.
