Earlier this year, flying at the Dallas Airport in Oregon demonstrated a state-of-the-art, flexible instrument landing system that is more reliable and less expensive than conventional ILS installed at the airport. FAA Director David R. Henson specifically went to the scene to test the advanced computer-based landing system (ALS). Unlike the star-based system under development, ALS uses the existing airborne ILS equipment. The main markets for ALS will be those small, low capacity terrain-constrained airports. This is the view of John Stortez, president of the system’s manufacturer of advanced navigation and positioning companies. Meanwhile, the company revealed that systematic forensics will take place in April this year.
