轩辕作为中华民族人文始祖的名号，其本义是什么乃一千古大谜，现有诸说均未能破译这一谜底。本文综合运用训诂学、文献学、文化人类学、民俗学方面的相关知识对“轩辕”本义进行求解，得出结论：１．轩辕与黄帝在起源上不是同一个人或氏族的称谓，前者可追溯到远古氏族社会，后者则是春秋战国时代的产物，两者的合一大体完成于战国晚期至西汉早年；２．“轩辕”一词本义即“旋圆”，它是先人对龙蛇形状的指称，蛇乃轩辕族人的图腾物；先人不直呼龙蛇而以别名指称，乃是图腾禁忌的表现。

In this paper, we use the related knowledge of Exegesis, Philology, Cultural Anthropology, Folklore to solve the original meaning of “Xuanyuan” and conclude: 1. The origin of Xuanyuan and the Yellow Emperor is not the same person or clan title, the former can be traced back to the ancient clan society, the latter is the product of the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the two are generally completed in the late Warring States period to the early Western Han Dynasty; The original meaning of “Xuanyuan” is “rounding”. It refers to the ancestors’ reference to the shape of a dragon-serpent. The serpent is a totem of the Xuanyuan people. When the ancestor refers to an alias without calling the dragon serpent, it is a manifestation of taboo.
