Poe’s poetry always gives the reader an enduring impression, and produces an effect that even the stony people can be moved into tears. The large “subjective universality” (Leitch 510) it achieves is inseparable from one of Poe’s basic poetic principles, namely, “to write a poem simply for the poem’s sake” (Dole 251).
