Most AIDS and HIV carriers in the United States are men, but the epidemic is rapidly spreading among women. In several large municipal hospitals in New York and Florida, more than 5% of pregnant women have been reported to have been infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Medical examinations of newly recruited members of the professional group and newly enlisted recruits have shown that the numbers of men and women living with HIV are approximately equal. More than 10 million people worldwide are infected with HIV, almost a third of them women. Nearly 1 million people in the United States are infected with HIV, one eighth of whom are women. However, the distribution of cases in several eastern states is close to the world ratio.
