In April 2009, UNESCO convened the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Bonn, Germany. As one of the 25 demonstration projects in the world, the “Yangtze River Water School” project was invited to showcase the practice of ESD in China. As World Water Day and China Water Week are approaching, we work with Shangri-La Institute to promote the innovative “Yangtze River Water School”, an innovative primary and secondary school water education project that shares the fruits and experiences of participating schools with readers. The “Yangtze River Water School” project was jointly launched by the Ministry of Education's Basic Education Curriculum and Materials Development Center, UNESCO, Swarovski and Shangri-La Institute of Sustainable Communities. The project selected a number of schools from several important areas in the Yangtze River Basin to build a platform for the cultivation of students' innovative spirit and practical ability through participatory curriculum development and local problem-solving learning. The project encourages students to walk out of the classroom, walk into the community, cultivate their temperament, gain true knowledge, ability and greater intelligence in the natural environment and in their actions to protect the river with the community. The current project column will introduce the project background, implementation strategies and activities of the two schools, and more school cases and achievements will be displayed in subsequent phases. Teachers are welcome to participate in the discussion, offer advice and suggestions to this section as a platform to jointly promote the ecological protection in the Yangtze River Basin and primary and secondary education for sustainable development and exploration of practice.
