Mauritius is a multilingual country in which the main languages used by locals are English, French and Creole and a small number of ancestral languages for religious ceremonies. In Mauritius, most children use Creole at home to communicate on a daily basis, learning English, French and ancestral languages at school from the first grade of elementary school. The author conducted informal observations and interviews with six local families in Mauritius during the 40 days from 20 November 2008 to 1 January 2009. This article starts with the use and attitude of the language in Mauritius, proposing appropriate cultural policies and strategic recommendations. The first part of this article describes the population and language usage in Mauritius. The second part investigates the locality’s attitude toward the inclusion of the Creole by the government in the education system. The third part is to discuss and analyze the data collected from interview and observation. The conclusion part proposes the language planning suggestion.
