Glomerular production of prostaglandins (PGs) is important in the regulation of renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, and renin secretion. Smith et al indirectly demonstrated glomerular synthesis of PG by using cyclooxygenase immunofluorescence staining on the glomerulus of cattle and sheep. Sraer et al. Demonstrated in rat arachidonic acid-containing media that glomerular epithelial cells and mesangial cells can synthesize PGE_2, PGF_ (2) and 6-keto-PGF_ (1). Aiken et al. Demonstrated that vasopressin can mediate renal vasoconstriction after inhibition of fatty acid cyclo-oxygenase by indomethacin. Baylis et al. Have found that indomethacin and methoxyfen acid enhance the effect of vasopressin on single nephron glomerular filtration rate and capillary plasma flow rate. These studies show that PG antagonizes the hemodynamic changes caused by angiotensin.
