In all types of ovarian tumors, epithelial tumors are the most common. Serous and mucinous cystadenocarcinomas often make diagnoses until later in life, and early detection of recurrence of these malignancies is also difficult. Many laboratories have tried to identify antigens with these tumor characteristics and can be used to help diagnose and understand early postoperative patients. Barlow and Bhattacharya have demonstrated that some ovarian tumor-associated antigens are present in the cystic fluid of epithelial ovarian malignancies. The authors sought to identify useful tumor markers to characterize the antigen secreted and / or excreted by ovarian epithelial tumors, and used cyst fluid of mucinous and serous cystadenocarcinoma, which is rich in glycoproteins and is available in large quantities. At Duke University Medical Center, the authors obtained cyst fluid from one patient with mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, stage Ia, and type O blood.
