  March Topic

Anchorman: Finally, in this popular month for getting married, a look at white weddings that are going green. 1)Eco-friendly concerns have now become a big part of the “big day” for many couples. Here’s chief environmental affairs 2)correspondent Ann Thompson.
Ann Thompson: For Kristi Papenfuss and Joshua Houdek, being green is a way of life.
Kristi Papenfuss: Well, these are the 3)Ecuadorian ones.
  Ann Thompson: They buy 4)organic.
Kristi Papenfuss: Let’s try this one.
Ann Thompson: He bikes to work. She 5)tends a garden of native plants that they water from a
  6)rainbarrel.
So it is no surprise that on their wedding day their love for each other would reflect their love for the earth.
Joshua Houdek: When we first were planning our wedding, we didn’t even know of the term “Green Wedding.” (Yeah) We just wanted to have all our friends together and do it in a
  7)sustainable way.
Ann Thompson: Starting with their invitations on recycled paper, rings of recycled gold, 8)pesticide-free flowers; and at the reception, an organic menu, Fair Trade wine注1, 9)biodegradable
  10)utensils, even solar-powered music.
Kristi Papenfuss: If you like to play in it, you’d like to be in it. Then there is a responsibility for helping maintain it. (It’s true.)
Ann Thompson: A walk down the aisle leaves a significant carbon footprint注2. The average wedding creates fourteen and a half tons of 11)carbon dioxide, that’s two tons more than the average person does over an entire year. The seventy-billion-dollar-a-year wedding industry offers many shades of green. There are websites to help you find everything from eco-friendly 12)gowns and diamonds to honeymoons and your first house. Six years ago when Gerald Prolman started his company organicbouquet.com, weddings were just a tiny 13)fraction of his business.
Gerald Prolman: Now we get calls every day from brides and event planners and florists who want organic flowers for their weddings.
Ann Thompson: The industry insists this is not a fad. Going green is becoming as much of a tradition as having something borrowed and something blue注3. But beauty has its price. Wedding planners say going green can add ten to twenty per cent to the average wedding which already costs nearly twenty-eight thousand dollars. So how does a couple balance their budget while being kind to the earth? Kristi Papenfuss says it’s about trade-offs.
Kristi Papenfuss: Organic food is a little bit more expensive, but the dress that I bought is a 14)sundress that I can wear over and over and over again. And that was less expensive.
Ann Thompson: Kristi and Joshua’s wedding on this, their most special day, a reflection of the values they live every day.

So how green is your lifestyle? Will the green lifestyle challenge the traditional way of life?

Sam Teeger: Yes, definitely! Respecting and doing your bit for the environment is a lifestyle choice. If we can live a greener, healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle, why not go for it? Now, the fact is, that part of our traditional lifestyle has created tons of pollution, but we are on the right track to change it and lead to G-living.

Why not go for it? 词组on the right track表示“做对了;走上正途(thinking or doing sth. correctly)”。

Amelia Zetlin: I am an environmentalist. Green lifestyle is more than a fad. When there are too many days when you can’t see the sun because of the smog and polluted air, people will change their ways, even if it means changing old ways of life. I am doing my part to protect the environment, like using energy saving light bulbs in my whole house; bringing a handkerchief wherever I go instead of using too many tissues; and categorizing the daily rubbish. These are all small things that can be done easily. Living green will require a whole new way of life.

I am doing my part有“我正在做份内事”之意。

Joe Chen: I doubt it. Human beings tend to be lazy. Easy, convenient and comfy, that’s where it’s at. Why do we bother to go green if we are happy with the traditional lifestyle? For example, the modern eco-friendly furniture looks simple and fashionable but it’s not practical at all. I feel very insecure when sitting on that skinny wrought iron spring lounge chair.

That’s where it’s at相当于That’s the point.(那就是重点;那便是问题所在。)

Betty Ho: No, I don’t think so. As a matter of fact, I wonder if the traditional way of life will challenge the green lifestyle, though. It’s challenging and apparently not easy at all to convince those who drive cars to work to carpool; to remind those who shower for hours not to waste so much water; and to talk those who litter into discarding their garbage into the trash dump.

词组talk sb. into doing sth.

Casper Monk: I’ll bet few people will spend heaps of money for a green car while a traditional auto costs way less. Actually, many new products and services related to G-living are likely to be more costly. Green lifestyle is still a brand new concept to us. Some people don’t even seem to know much about it but just go along for the ride. Such an advanced lifestyle won’t challenge our old way of life yet.

  Tips: I’ll bet…
