Commodity and cosmetics supermarket chain DM everywhere in Germany. In 1973, its founder Gert Werner opened his shop in his hometown of Karlsruhe. By the early 1980s, DM supermarkets had grown to more than 100. Werner said: “We had copied the same model everywhere and we had an accurate concept of the ideal branch, and we tried to build the branch according to that concept.” As a result, a network was formed, the head of the branch was supervised by the district head, who was in turn responsible for the regional sales director. The staff at each branch became the machine that received the order. However, a little thing changed everything. On that day, Werner came to the DM branch in Ettlingen and he leaned back to the counter, with the result counter moving backwards. The person in charge of the branch told him that someone had already steal the store's contents twice in this way. Werner asked, “What did you do?” The answer was: “I told the director that he should be sent to secure the counter.”
