Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an aberrant surface optical phenomenon that can amplify Raman signals of surface molecules by about a million times, even for some nanoparticle systems up to a hundred billion fold, and is therefore expected to become Important detection tool in single molecule science. By introducing the history, characteristics and prospects of SERS, this article shows that it is an important phenomenon in nanoscience. The combination of SERS and nanoscience methods and other characterization techniques is expected to reveal the controversial SERS mechanism and related basic scientific issues for more than 20 years. SERS will also be developed as an important tool for surface science and nanoscience.
