张承志是一个理想主义者，追求和探索是他的秉性，他寻求理想中的“黄金牧场”，寻求“想象的净土”，寻求生命的价值和意义，寻求心灵的归宿。在追求中，张承志才发现现实并不象他想象的那样美好，金牧场并不存在，“想象的净土”只是一个美好的愿望。寻梦给他带来不小的挫折感,但挫折并没有使张承志放弃追求，他将自己追寻的目标进行了重新调整和认识，他明白了人生追寻的并不是辉煌的终止，而是辉煌的过程，在过程中感受辉煌。
