In the fifties and sixties of the 20th century, a number of young teachers such as Zhou Changgu at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts painted portraits in the frenzy of new Chinese portrayals reflecting the reality. They paid special attention to the academic study of the combination of modern figures and traditional writing. The broader “middle and western integration” experiments in the area would like to go deeper, raise the awareness of problems, and have more understanding of the tradition. Therefore, this group of people became a nationwide learning model in the early days of reform and opening up, and was called “Zhepai Figure Painting” in the art world.
