历史与档案的“公众”使命形成了美国公众史学与档案学对话的起点。20世纪70年代,伴随着“职业化”探索与各种社会运动,公众意识日益敏锐,开始越来越多地使用档案馆资源,档案学迅速发展,而当时刚刚兴起的公众史学为档案学注入新的动力。两个学科都关注如何解释与保存过去,都属于历史的求真实践,在内容和呈现方式上存在共生关系,在实现社会公正的理念上有共同诉求,在教育内容和方法上也存有密切关联。在数字化和全球化的今天,美国的档案服务于多元受众的状况,为中国公众史学与档案学的结合提供了新的思索空间。
