This article considers various ways to improve conventional radar display formats with digital scan converters and how to expand the display to give previously unobtainable pictures. The major drawbacks of shift register based scan converters are discussed, particularly where such converters are used to transform the radar polar coordinate display format into a linear television format. Then, the problem of how to convert a coordinate axis using a semiconductor fast random access memory becomes a problem of realizing a conventional coordinate axis transformation scheme with relatively simple hardware. This article outlines the special display and transformation issues associated with the motion platform system and discusses the use of motion stabilization techniques in the converter to simplify the accumulation between the scan. Subsequently, the structure of such a “ground-stabilized” converter was introduced to stabilize the display on the ground or platform of choice. Finally, a discussion of the limitations of a simple system based on updating a pixel at a time for each word of memory and outlining a more complex structure that updates more than one pixel at a time.
