唐代是中国历史上佛教兴盛发展的一个时期。皇室和上层统治者对佛教大力提倡,在宫廷中建立内道场,专为皇家进行诵读、斋会、讲经、行道。不仅在长安和洛阳建立了相当多的寺院(有学者考证,仅长安一地就有二百余座寺院),而且在各个州建立官方寺院,至于地方民间寺院更是难以统计。狄仁杰曾上疏说:“里陌多有经坊,阛阓亦立精舍”。在这个大的历史背景下,佛教思想必然影响到当时人们生活习俗的各个方面,墓葬习俗也不例外。历年的唐代墓葬考古资料中曾出现有不少佛教影响的例证,过去没有引起学术界的特别注意,更少有专文探讨。有学者还认为魏晋以后,墓葬中宗教因素越来越淡薄,虽然社会上佛道盛行,
The Tang Dynasty was a period of flourishing development of Buddhism in Chinese history. Royal and upper rulers vigorously advocated Buddhism, establishing inner court in the court, and practicing recitation, fasting, preaching and walking. Not only have a large number of monasteries been established in Chang’an and Luoyang (some scholars have verified that there are over 200 monasteries in Chang’an alone), but also official monasteries are set up in various states, and local monasteries are even more difficult to count.
