地理信息系统 ( Geographical Information System,GIS)是以地理空间数据库为基础 ,对空间相关数据进行采集、管理、操作、分析、模拟和显示 ,并采用地理模型分析方法 ,适时提供多种空间和动态的地理信息。在媒介传播疾病以及与地理空间因素有关疾病的流行病学研究中 ,利用 GIS处理空间相关数据 ,对影响疾病地理分布的自然环境因素 (如土壤、植被和温度等 )进行分析 ,有助于对疾病的深入了解与研究。迄今为止 ,GIS在莱姆病、疟疾、丝虫病和血吸虫病等疾病的流行病学研究中已经发挥重要的作用 ,在流行病学领域具有良好的应用前景
