1979年,下乡当知青的周光荣被选调回城工作。本想成为一名教师的他,却被固执的父亲安排进泸州火葬场接班。那时的火葬场,位于郊外的红星村,背靠山岗,脚踏水塘,岗上是遮天蔽日的野松林,对面是杂草丛生的乱坟岗。沟底的火葬场,被人戏称之为“358部队”,即3个老头,5亩地,8间房。作为一个优秀的老三届毕业生,刚开始,风华正茂的周光荣并不情愿在这个破烂不堪的地方度过自己美好的青春。可是,凭着一股倔强和干一行爱一行的精神,他还是通过了父亲精心安排的层层考验,迅速成为了一名合格的殡葬工,并开始真正热爱这份工作。
