After the Yuan Dynasty unified the country, the rulers vigorously supported Taoism and made Taoism prosperous as never before. It formed a whole tract of truth represented by Wang Chongyang and his disciples Chu in the north, and two major factions under the guidance of Zhang Tianshi in the south. The prevalence of Taoism had a great impact on the literati of the Yuan Dynasty. Because of the cultural alienation and the reduction of literary status, the literati find it hard to enter the career path and turn to Taoism for spiritual comfort.
