The British Ministry of Education recently introduced new rules for primary school students: primary school children in England (11 years of age or so) must participate in 12 × 12 multiplication table test. The new regulation will start trial this summer in 80 primary schools in England, covering about 3,000 primary school students. Starting next year, it will be popularized throughout the country. The backdrop to this new regulation by the UK Department of Education is that English pupils generally do not do well in mathematics, especially in terms of calculations, calculations and problem solving. Last year’s test of reading, mathematics and science by some 500,000 primary and secondary school students in 65 countries and regions in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that the British ranked only 26th in math.
