A pilot and four people were on a small plane. Suddenly something was wrong with the machine while it was flying in the sky.The smoke was everywhere in the plane. The pilot told the people there were only four parachutes(降落伞). All of them were worried and wanted to leave the plane as quickly as possible. They started to make excuses.
The pilot said,“I must mend the machine.”With these words,he took a parachute and jumped out.
Then a man stood up.“I am a doctor,”he said,“I save lives and help people live longer.”Taking a parachute,he also jumped out.
The man next to him said,“I must have a parachute.I have to attend an important match.I’m sure I will win the game because I’m the cleverest person there.”He picked up a pack and jumped out.
Only two men were left—an old man and a young cliff climber.By this time the plane was going down fast. The businessman said,“Young man,I’m old and you are still young. You take the last parachute.”The young cliff climber smiled.“Don’t worry,”he said,“We can both jump to the safety because there are still two parachutes.Just now the clever person jumped out with my backpack.”

Bartley was making his first trip on the whaling ship Star of the East. Suddenly a man on watch saw a huge sperm whale(抹香鲸).The whaler(捕鲸者) knew this by the size of the spray. They lowered their small boats.Jame Bartley was in the first longboat. The men rowed until they were close to the whale.A harpoon(鱼叉) was thrown and it sank into the whale’s flesh. The whale crashed into the boat ,snapping its tail at the men and wreckage(残骸) of the boats. When the survivors were picked up, James Bartley was missing.
Before sunset(日落), the whale was captured. The sailors tied the whale’s dead-body to the side of the ship. Because of the hot weather, they cut up the whale right away.Otherwise, the meat would rot and the oil would spoil. When they got to the stomach, they felt something moving about widely. They had thought it was a big live fish. But when they opened the stomach, they found it was James Bartley. After the trip,Bartley never returned to the sea. 阅读短文内容,选出最佳答案。
