Coming into freshman year at Paul College, Samantha was concerned about her ability as an individual to make an impact(影响力)on such a large community, for it was never hard for her to stand out from peers in high school. Luckily, each first-year student in Paul College takes part in what is called the First-year Innovation(创新)and Research Experience, commonly known as the FIRE Program, where she was able to make invaluable connections with her fellow students and their peer advisor who had so much first-hand experience with what they all were going through. The biggest highlight of her freshman year was working alongside her FIRE team on a Grand Challenge Project, in which every FIRE team competed against one another in the Undergraduate Research Conference(URC). Each team had to create a unique product that addressed one of the five following real-world issues:‘Water is Life’,‘Food’,‘Threats from Cyberspace’, ‘Medical Breakthroughs’, and‘Addictive Society’. Her team addressed the growing issue of‘Addictive Society’. Doing research, collecting facts and organizing discussions or even debates were a huge amount of work before they went to compete against other teams.
After weeks of preparation, all their efforts paid off at the Undergraduate Research Conference. They earned a spot in the final round of the conference, where they competed against the top team from each of the other Grand Challenge groups. They were so overcome with pride when they were finally announced as the overall first place team at the college!
If it wasn’t for her group’s determination, excellent teamwork and their awesome peer advisor Hayley, they would not have been able to accomplish everything they did. This experience will be instrumental in her future.
24. What can we know about Samantha from paragraph 1?
A. She performs quite well in high school.
B. She represents her team to win first prize.
C. She applies to enter for the FIRE Program.
D. She has trouble with her research in college.
25. How does Samantha’s team compete against other teams?
A. By providing facts.
B. By presenting products.
C. By organizing debates.
D. By carrying out research.
26. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To praise the advisor’s work.
B. To show Samantha’s qualities.
C. To highlight the strength of unity.
D. To imply the team’s future success.

B. Grow with FIRE
C. Learn from Peers
D. Gain from Competition

Remember when your mom told you not to eat too many candy bars and sweets because they can cause tooth decay(蛀牙)?However, it turns out that chocolate can be more beneficial to your teeth than you might expect. Recent studies show that chocolate can effectively fight against tooth decay, as if we need another excuse to eat chocolate.
Chocolate offers protection like fluoride, a main ingredient in most household toothpastes. Not only does chocolate protect our teeth, but it can do so very effectively. Studies show that chocolate has compounds that provide strong protection for teeth. One of the compounds in chocolate, CBH, is shown to protect even more effectively than fluoride. Tooth decay happens when bacteria work to turn sugar into acids(酸)in our mouths. This is why eating foods with high sugar content can lead to more tooth decay. The compounds in chocolate, however, are anti-bacterial and can fight against bacteria in your mouth. The CBH compound in particular also works to strengthen tooth enamel(牙釉), and protects against tooth decay.
Does this mean that you can eat as much chocolate as you want without worrying about your teeth? It depends on the types of chocolate that you like. The protective effect of chocolate is most effective when you chew on cocoa beans. Of course, this option is not very appealing to most people. A more tasty option is to choose dark chocolate with little sugar content, ideally no more than 6 to 8 grams per serving. For other types of chocolate with higher sugar content, the effect will be lessened. However, because of the protective compounds, it is still better for your teeth than other sweets and desserts containing the same amount of sugar.
28. Which of the following can best explain“ingredient” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Material. B. Product. C. Flavor. D. Feature.
29. What can we infer about the compounds in chocolates?
A. They can make chocolates cure tooth decay.
B. They can effectively stop teeth from decaying.
C. They may protect teeth better than toothpastes do.
D. They may soon replace most household toothpastes.
30. How does chocolate fight tooth decay?
A. Break down acids.
B. Build up compounds.
C. Fix up tooth enamels.
D. Fight against bacteria.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Chocolate plays the role of toothpaste.
B. Chocolate protects against tooth decay.
C. Chocolate is the best choice for teeth protection.
D. Chocolate is healthier to teeth than other sweets.

A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who makes calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.
The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and the passengers on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phone. Using a directional antenna(天線), the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of a duration(持续时间)long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation. While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice—and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a“future development”.
Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement(执行)technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.
32. Why is the roadside system used according to paragraph 1?
A. To send out cellphone signals to the drivers.
B. To detect the driver’s illegal use of cellphone.
C. To monitor people’s use of phones while driving.
D. To warn people against using phones while driving.
33. How does the detector of the roadside system work?
A. It measures the length of the phone.
B. It warns drivers with a phone in hand.
C. It picks up radio waves from handsets.
D. It activates the vehicle’s Bluetooth system.
34. What does the text suggest drivers do about the road warning sign?
A. Swift to Bluetooth while driving.
B. Have a close watch of road signs.
C. Avoid being picked up by detectors.
D. Stop using a hands-free mobile phone.
35. What will the county council probably do in the future?
A. Share the devices with the police.
B. Make the system more advanced.
C. Replace the police with the new system.
D. Take steps to settle road safety problems.
