Objective To understand the personality characteristics of medical students and their relationship with academic performance. Methods Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) was used to test 358 first graders. Results The EPQ scale showed that the average L-dimension of girls was lower than that of boys. The E-dimension of urban students was higher than that of rural students. The E and L dimensions of boys were higher than those of the national norm and the N dimension was lower than that of the national norm. Lower than the national norm; male and female N dimension lower than the national norm. Analysis of variance showed that the L dimension of the excellent test group was lower than the poor grade group. Partial correlation coefficient showed that test scores were positively correlated with L dimension, negatively correlated with P dimension, but not with E, N. Urban and rural areas and gender have no effect on academic performance. Conclusions Medical students are emotionally stable, boys are outgoing, and girls are more congenial. Stable emotions and low mental quality are conducive to the improvement of academic performance
