1982~1983年间,前苏联在研制第三代航母的同时,开始研制苏-27K与米格-29K舰载机。到1984年年初,米高扬设计局加快了米格-29K发展的速度,成立了一个由设计者和试飞员组成的研制机构,由主任设计师M·瓦尔登贝格领导,下设研究中心、试飞实验室和地面试验场,并配备了综合训练模拟器等设备。1988年6月23日米高扬飞机制造厂的试飞员T·奥巴基洛夫完成了米格-29K的首次试飞,1989年11月1日仍由该试飞员首次将米格-29K降落在“第比利斯”号航母的甲板上,1小时后又从该舰的斜角起飞甲板上起飞,完成了舰基起落试飞。
Between 1982 and 1983, while developing the third generation aircraft carrier, the former Soviet Union began to develop the Su-27K and MiG-29K carrier-based aircraft.
