Formula 1 signs a multi-million dollar contract with a new partner in the midst of a global financial crisis.
Dermot Boden (LG Electronics): In fact, we will probably increase our 1)expenditure next year even though there are these…these economic situations.
One could be led to believe that some sports and some companies are not feeling the credit 2)crunch. But don’t let this deal fool you—Formula 1 is feeling the heat. F1 teams and the International Automobile Federation met in Geneva to discuss ways to cut costs.
Jackie Stewart (Former F1 World Champion): It’s a decision that has been taken by the teams themselves. Economically, at this time in the world, there’s a lot of pressure on a lot of companies…the car companies are one of those areas of business that are feeling…the…the…economic climate. So I think it makes sense for everyone to make the effort to cut costs.
The crisis affecting the auto industry had a direct impact on the world of golf. General Motors just ended its 9-year sponsorship relationship with world number one, Tiger Woods. More deals in the sport could collapse.
Ken Schofield (FMR. European Tour Executive Director): No individual and no business will be unaffected by this. That…that I think is…is a given. These are harsh times and they look like they will continue for a minimum of a couple of years. So there will have to be sponsor 3)casualties.
Drew Barrand (Sports Industry Group): In any market we’ll see sponsorship deals coming out and new sponsors coming in. Obviously, the way the economy is at the minute makes it very difficult for sponsors to…to really, sort of, push that investment forward.
Football hasn’t escaped the credit crunch either. In England, West Ham United sponsors XL recently filed for bankruptcy. And West Bromwich Albion became the first team since 1992 to begin the Premier League season without a sponsor. There is less money available for sports sponsorship, and even soccer’s traditional “fat cats” are sitting up and taking notice.
Ramon Calderon (Real Madrid President): There’s no doubt that football is going to be affected also. It’s a very big crisis. It’s a global crisis. Of course it’s worrying us for anyone the economic situation of the world.
Peter Kenyon (Chelsea CEO): I think you got to recognize that sport is not 4)immune to what’s going on in the world. And therefore we’ve got to make sure that…we’re…we’re equipped for it.
Both Chelsea and Real Madrid have suggested recently that they would not be investing in new players in the upcoming transfer window, yet another sign that everyone is looking to 5)slash their budgets in these times of economic hardship.
