Objective To investigate the telomerase activity in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and its relationship with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Methods The telomerase activity and EBV DNA expression in 60 cases of NPC were detected by PCR-TRAP and in situ hybridization. Results The positive rate of telomerase activity in 51 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was 85% (51/60), the positive rate of EBV DNA was 88.3% (53/60) in 60 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The expression of telomerase EBV DNA expression was positively correlated (r = 0.83, P <0.01). Conclusion The activation of telomerase in nasopharyngeal carcinoma may be related to Epstein-Barr virus infection, which plays an important role in the occurrence and development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
